Honestly, when I purchased the tickets from the Denver Center for Performing Arts on a Cyber Monday deal… I didn’t know anything about it but it sounded interesting, and I love theater, so I snapped a couple up.
Fast forward to several months later when it was time to go to the show. I wasn’t sure what to expect but was excited to see what the night would hold.
This company has residences in Chicago and Los Angeles but also tours (hence my opportunity to see them in Denver) and while I am not sure of the size of the theaters elsewhere the Denver theater was an intimate one where you could see absolutely everything up close and personal.
The show starts off with the cast, in the case of my show 5 guys, asking the audience for what should be the title of the play that they are about to perform. As you might imagine, you get some colorful suggestions… and none of them on theme for Shakespeare but clearly that is what is about to become part of the fun.
They begin by saying this is the first, and last, time this play will ever be performed. And that my friends, is an accurate and hilarious statement. For the next ~90 minutes the cast works to weave the suggested title of the play into a theme that has a Shakespeare feel, with speech like Shakespeare and it is hilarious!
Honestly it’s so funny the cast can’t even keep a straight face the whole time! It’s a blast to watch some of them waiting in the wings for their next scene while others on stage trying to follow the insanity that is happening while coming up with their next lines while laughing out loud at what is transpiring.
The skill and talent of these actors to create something on the fly from nothing is nothing short of amazing. And it is so amusing! You could see this show 100 times and each time would be different.
I am only sad that so far I have only had the opportunity to go once but I am looking for opportunities to go again.
Seriously – check this out if you get a chance. You won’t be disappointed.
To go or not to go… that is actually not the question… GO!
