In chatting with one of the bartenders, she told us that we absolutely needed to go visit Surfing Goat Dairy. She mentioned they had some of the best goat cheese she’d ever had. Given we love animals (and goats are just so cute!) and we love cheese – we were in! The bartender did recommend that we call to check the hours because post-pandemic and post fires sometimes the website isn’t as up to date as it could be. I realized that is great advice for all the things we wanted to do so I implemented this in all our planning.
So one morning we set-off to visit the Surfing Goat Dairy excited to meet some cute creatures and taste some yummy dairy delights! It’s an easy ~35 minute drive from Wailea and we enjoyed the jaunt jamming to some tunes.
As we pulled up we already adored what we saw! Surfboards give such a great aesthetic to the entrance.
We pulled in to park and there were goats, goats, goats…. Everywhere! Ok, all of them are in grazing areas but everywhere we looked there was another group of goats. We were giddy and couldn’t wait to learn more about, and meet, these great creatures. We looked into the pen with 3 youngsters and giggled as they played and head butted each other. We weren’t sure how all of this worked (and had not booked in advance online because we just hadn’t been able to plan ahead enough) so we wandered to the window ordering area and chatted with the friendly gal there. We purchased 2 tour tickets and a cheese tasting.
We sat down in the picnic area and were excited to dig into the tasting. They brought out 6 different cheese (I know the picture shows 5 but they then brought a 6th separately) and crackers for us to enjoy. All were creamy and delicious. The way this cheese is made is in such a way that you don’t get that major tang that you sometimes get with goat cheese. These were smooth and delightful We each tried to pick a favorite from the tasters but it was difficult! We honestly liked all of them. Ultimately Marissa tended to like the Men’s Challenge the most and my slight favorite was the Ivory Coast but honestly, we’d have kept eating each and every one of them every day.

We finished the cheeses and wandered back to the pen area with the 3 smaller goats as it was an area adjacent to where all the guests could hang out. It was so much fun to watch these cuties play and then it was time for the tour which started right in that area. At the start of the tour we found out that we were welcome to pet these adorable creatures and that they love it. Well you don’t have to tell us twice! We made 3 new friends!

Usually all of the goats on the farm are dairy goats, and that was the case for 2 of these youngsters but the all black one was a unique case. Meet Culotte! Culotte’s family was impacted by the Lahaina fires and his humans asked if he could hang out at Surfing Goat Dairy until they were able to bring him back home. So Culotte had been hanging out at his, let’s call it sleepaway camp digs, for about a month at this point and was finally getting used to human interaction.

We learned about the origins of this dairy and how their goat cheese is made. It’s all fresh and has no preservatives so it’s extra delicious.
We got a fantastic tour of the various areas and even got to feed a bunch of the goats. Not surprisingly they were even more excited to see us when we had food… go figure, right?!

They were incredibly sweet and enjoyed having their head and horn area scratched which we were happy to oblige! We learned about the different types of goats they have their and about how they group them. They are very social creatures and were quite happy to be around us humans.

I don’t want to give away all the details because you need to go visit here yourself. It’s a great tour especially if you love animals (and goat cheese!) and it’s very local. It’s family-owned so you are truly supporting a great small business if you go visit.
Oh and don’t worry, there is a great gift shop where you can buy all the goat cheese your tummy can handle, as well as some cute goat gifts, and even some chocolate truffles made with goat cheese (delish!)
Now GO! And make some new goat friends at Surfing Goat Dairy!
